A very useful way of looking at
cell signalling pathways, providing a rationale for crosstalk and evolutionary
flexibility. Some idea of the functioning of neural nets is helpful but
not essential.
Emergent
properties of networks of biological signaling pathways. Bhalla US,
et al. Science. 1999 Jan 15;283(5400):381-7.
An example of why it is important
to consider not just at the individual pieces of data, but the implications
of all the known data put together. If the resulting model accurately
predicts the behaviour of the system, you've learned something new, and
if it doesn't, your data is incomplete.
