I go by the email name of shipworm here at Geocities...shipworm is otherwise known as Teredo navilis, the worm which has been the scourge of wooden ships at sea for millennia...These creatures infested and nearly destroyed La Mantena, a primitive, 60-foot, 20-ton raft that I built on an expedition in the summer of 1998. We sailed about 700 miles before having to pull over; the other guys are rebuilding the raft, but I had to get back to my PhD studies in archaeology.
