Miri,
a coastal town in the northern Sarawak region, has grown tremendously since
its early days when oil was first discovered in 1910. It has undergone
several waves of economic booms. This is evidenced by the continuous development,
population growth and influx of foreign tourists particularly from neighboring
country like Brunei. Tourists from Europe, America, Australia and other
countries are steadily increasing as Miri is the gateway to the world’s
largest cave system which is the Mulu caves. The coastal areas of Miri
are also surrounded by beautiful corals which offer excellent fishing grounds.
It is also the
fastest growing town in Sarawak and aims to be a resort city by the year
2005 as envisioned by Sarawak’s Deputy Chief Minister, YB Datuk Dr. George
Chan Hong Nam who is also the Minister of Finance and Public Utilities.
The Sarawak Government has called on the public and private sectors to
cooperate and assist the government in developing the tourism industry
in Miri. In answering the call of the Sarawak Government, some angling
enthusiasts decided to form a club to promote the sport of fishing
in Miri in January 1996.
