About Us Stony Rapids is a small community in Northern Saskatchewan, with a population of about 360 people. We are approximately 40 miles from the Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories border. Our community overlooks the beautiful Fond-du-Lac River. This river and Lake Athabasca provide the link between Stony Rapids, Fond-du-Lac, Uranium City, Camsel Portage, and even Fort MacMurray.
Access In the winter our main transportation to these communities is by snowmobile or airplane, although, there is a winter road to Fon-du-Lac and Uranium City for part of the winter. In the summer, most of this travel is done by boat. As of August, 1999, there is a seasonal road to Stony Rapids. The road is mostly considered a winter road but can be accessed during the summer, when it's been dry.
Businesses and Services Our community has about 30 businesses and services, including a school, 3 stores, two restaurant/hotels, a Bed & Breakfast,RCMP, SERM, Hospital, Post Office, 2 Air Companies (Pronto Airways & Transwest Air), and several construction companies. The new Hospital opened here in June, 2003.(See Link for Business and Services for complete list and phone numbers) There are also several fishing lodges in the area. The fishing in the Far North is phenomenal. There is a wide variety of fish including Pike, Walleye, Pickeral, Arctic Grayling, and Trout.
The School Stony Rapids School has 65 students, 4 teachers, and 2 tutors as well as a separate Kindergarten/Preschool. Housing is provided for teaching staff by Northern Lights School Division #113.
Employment The main areas of employment are the Hospital, Scott's General Store, Camsel Portage Transportation Company, The Northern Store, Transwest Air,Pronto Airways, the construction companies and S.E.R.M.(in the summer). There are often jobs advertised within the community. |
