Emergency Services/High Adventure
Explorer Post 440

Serving The Youth of Lincoln County into the Next Century!

Post 440 History (in brief).

Emergency Services Explorer Post 440 was established in 1994 as a Law Enforcement Post through the Merrill Police Department. Since then, Post 440 has grown to encompass all of the Emergency Services fields through the continued cooperation of the Lincoln County Emergency Services Agencies.

In 1997 a movement was made within the Post to become focused on High Adventure activities as well, so it was agreed to encompass these activities into the post schedule.

Now as we move into the 21st century, Post 440 has done a complete overhaul of its programming. The Lincoln County Deputy's Association has agreed to become our new sponsor, and as a result, we have gained a few new faces which bring with them more knowledge, and hope for a better program.

What is Post 440?

Explorer Post 440 is an organization open to all youth ranging in age from 14 to 21 throughout Lincoln County. Members of Post 440 dedicate themselves to learning more about the different careers in the fields of Law Enforcement, Fire Fighting, & Emergency Medical Services, as well as the surrival techniques of the Great Outdoors. They gain this knowledge through numerous training sessions that they attend during the year, their numerous hands on experiences, as well as their continued, outstanding community service projects during the year.

Post 440 Membership Requirements!

  1. Post Members must be between the ages of 14 and 21.
  2. All Members are urged to be certified in Red Cross First Aid and CPR.
  3. Post Members will not violate the rules set in the Post bylaws.
  4. Post Members will adhear to the policys set forth by the Exploring Program.

Activities!

Members of Post 440 also participate in many different activities during the year. Their activities within the post include various fundraisers including the dances they sponsored during holidays for Junior High Youth, as well as handling First Aid for local festivals, and hosting a concession stand at the Candlelight Walks held at Council Grounds State Park in Merrill.

Other activites include various outings, to different places for outdoor experiences throughout the year. These activities are highlighted during the year by the post superactivty. This event takes our post to different areas where we can learn and have fun. In past years we have traveled to Six Flags Great America, The Zion Nuclear Power Plant, and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Milwaukee.

Post 440 also participates, heavily, in the Explorer Presidents' Association of Samoset Council. This Association brings together many different posts from throughout the Central Wisconsin Area for meetings and activities. These activities include the Winter Event held in Feburary, the Summer Olympics held in July, and the Road Rally held in late September. The year is again highlighted by the E.P.A.'s Fall Recognition, and Awards banquet held in early November.

At the 1996 and 1998 Post 440 was the proud reciepient of the Samoset Council's Six Point Star Award for excellence. Also, in 1996 and 1998 our head advisor was awarded with the council's Advisor of the Year Award. Along with this, Post 440 would like to congratulate one of its charter members, Myron Oestreich, for being Samoset Council's Explorer Of The Year for 1998.
