This is a picture of my son Sean. I am so proud of this young man. When Sean was a youngster we encouraged him to play team sports. He played tee ball, baseball and soccer. He kind of enjoyed soccer but we realized that team sports was not what he was interested in. We enrolled him in Kung Fu and he excelled there. It was very good for him because it gave him self confidence and discipline and encouraged interaction with others of all ages. Throughout this time his mother and I were involved in what he wanted to do. We just didn't palm him off on a coach, teacher or instructor. We were there. It is so important that parents are involved in their childrens' sports.
Also one of the things that I introduced Sean to while he was young was the shooting sports. We started with air guns and moved up to firearms. Yes, I taught him how to handle firearms, and some powerful ones at that, but more than that I taught him what the destructive power of a firearm can do and to respect them. After countless hours in the desert and mountains shooting I know that he would not "play with guns" or "horse play" with them.
One might say that it is wrong to place these kind of firearms in the reach of young people, and in some cases I would have to agree with that person. I would not think of introducing firearms to kids that have little or no morality influence from his or her parents. This would have to be first and foremost before any type of recreation with the kids can be accomplished. |

This is my six year old daughter shooting a 22 rifle. My son is providing range safety. As you can see I teach both of my kids to respect firearms. It is a great recreation outlet for the whole family. This was just a half day in the local desert. We also go camping and shooting for recreation. Shooting gives us a theme to our camping trips. It is affordable, fun and a great medium for family togetherness where real life family lessons and values can be conveyed. |
