No credentials are necessary for participation in Maitri Dorje. Those who come to our meetings have everything from little or no formal Buddhist and Meditation practice to practice of twenty years or more. Many of our members are formally connected with various Buddhist Centers in the New York City area. We encourage such connections for all who come to our meetings. Our practitioners are from all Buddhist traditions -- Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana.
We meet at the New York City Gay and Lesbian Community Center at their new location at One Little West 12th St. (see our Events listing for directions) in Greenwich Village on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 P.M. We have no dues or fees. Usually after meetings some of us join together for a meal in a neighborhood restaurant.
We have compiled a list of Buddhist
Centers in the New York area, many of which are personally
known to be Gay and Lesbian friendly and open.
We have a mailing list and strong e-mail presence, which
we invite you to join by contacting us.
Among our activities are participation in the work of the
Buddhist
AIDS Network. We also have been invited to practice
meditation at The Shambhala Center, 118 W. 22 St. (6th floor)in New York City,
on those Tuesday nights when we are not meeting
formally together. (Sitting from 6 to 7:30 PM, free Meditation Instruction is usually offered at 6:30 PM.)
