First, some basic info...

SO, WHAT IS FUSHIGI YUUGI ANYWAYS?!

Fushigi Yuugi is an anime fantasy series, similar in some ways to The Neverending Story. The story begins when Miaka, a Japanese junior high student, along with her best friend Yui, discover a strange book in the public library. This book, called The Universe of the Four Gods, sends her and her best friend to another world. Yui after only a short time gets sent back to their world for a while, and Miaka stays and becomes the Suzaku no Miko.

WAIT A MINUTE! SUZAKU NO *WHAT?!*

The Suzaku no Miko is a legend in the country of Konan (which is a land in this other world). There are four gods in this world, one for each of the countries, and of course Suzaku is the god of Konan. The animal she is characterized as being is the phoenix. Anyways, the legend is that someone will come from another world and become the Suzaku no Miko, the human manifestation, or avatar, of Suzaku, and make wishes come true. In order for this to happen, you not only the person from the other world (in this case Miaka), you also need to find seven people who are the Seishi of Suzaku.

SEISHI?! WHO ARE THEY!?!

Suzaku's Seishi are the seven guardians and protectors of the Suzaku no Miko. They each possess a character written somewhere on their body, which appears when they attempt to help her.

IS MIAKA THE ONLY ONE WHO BECOMES AN AVATAR OF ONE OF THE GODS?

As a matter of fact, no. There's also a Seiryuu no Miko. The other two gods did at one point have avatars and seishi that came along, but that was many years before the time in which this series takes place. They are mentioned though and some of the seishi are shown later in the series.
