Angelina=Lara?:   April 08 2000 |
Angelina Jolie To Be Lara
Eidos today announced that Angelina Jolie landed the role of Lara Croft.
Time was when the hottest question in the film business was, Who will be the next James Bond? That question assumed another form once it was disclosed that a film version of publisher Eidos and developer Core Design’s Tomb Raider game series, featuring virtual heroine Lara Croft, would become a Paramount Pictures film. The question with which the gaming and film communities have been obsessed--"Who will be Lara Croft?"--has been answered: Eidos today announced that Angelina Jolie, an Oscar winner, SAG Award winner and three-time Golden Globe honoree, has landed the coveted starring role in the much-anticipated live Tomb Raider action film.
The film will be directed at the hand of Simon West, the director of The General's Daughter and Con Air, and production begins principal photography this summer at the Pinewood Studios outside London. Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Colin Wilson are the producers. Charles Cornwall, Eidos' chief executive officer, is the executive producer, and Bobby Klein is the co-producer. The script is from Pat Massett and John Zinman.
Jolie won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the film Girl, Interrupted, for which she also won her third Golden Globe award and a Screen Actors Guild award. She earned her first Golden Globe award for TNT's George Wallace and her second for HBO's Gia, both of which also brought her Emmy award nominations. Her upcoming films include Gone in Sixty Seconds with Nicolas Cage.

Vertex vs Lightmap:   April 08 2000 |
For those of you who are interested Beyond 3D have posted an email they received from John Carmack clarifying Vertex lighting vs Lightmap lighting and why Vertex is faster.
"As you know,hw lighting actually is vertex lighting, but I was wondering why vertex lighting in Quake3(vertex lighting in Quake3 is done by CPU) is much faster,though much uglier than lightmaps. So I fired off a mail to John Carmack. Here is John's explaination:"
"The "vertex lighting" option in Q3 does more than just remove lightmaps, it forces every shader to only use a single rendering pass. This means you lose layered transparancy and environment mapping, among other things. A single pass is always going to be faster, even if you have multitexture (less texcoord transfer and less texture bandwidth). The character lighting is calculated exactly the way it always is, but the world lighting is completely static, based on a precalculation at map processing time. There is no dynamic lighting when in "vertex lighting" mode."
