How to setup your HP IPAQ 1900 Series Pocket PC for satellite Navigation.

As standard, the HP1900 Series cannot work with GPS as they don’t have a socket capable of connecting a GPS Receiver and do not have Bluetooth.

It IS however possible to do this, with a few additional extras!

If you haven’t yet bought a pocket PC, then I recommend spending as much as you can afford, I like HP myself! Anything with Bluetooth I recommend. The HP Ipaq 2200 is fine for GPS use and wont require extras..

If you have purchased a 1900 series and want to use GPS then you will have to purchase a few extras, and these can be a pain to setup, however, once setup, it does work, very well.

What you need, and where to get them..

Skip this bit if you just want help getting it working!!..

I use www.totalpda.co.uk

They are quite good, come well packaged, although my last order took over 2weeks because my Haicom receiver was out of stock even though the whole time the website reported it was INSTOCK, but still most sites do that so they don’t loose customers, so whilst it was annoying, I think it could happen anywhere.

You need a GPS receiver unit

The Haicom 203E GPS Receiver works well!

Haicom 3-in-1 Car mount

http://www.smartdevicesdirect.com/product_info.php?products_id=454&osCsid=772ba403d16267b24c1ea7d1d4a8cf86

I have never ordered from the above site, so check its ok!

I usually get these from totalpda also, but I cant find it on their site at the moment!!

Anyway, this is what you need to get your 1900 working, basically, your PDA sits in this mount, a cable comes in from your GPS receiver and also a Infrared sender is on the unit that connects your Haicom GPS to your 1900 series Infrared port.

If the above link doesn’t work when you read this, search google or something for “Haicom 3-in-1 Mount” and you will find it!

TomTom Software

I have only got TOMTOM working with this setup, so I would stick with it myself, besides I do think it is the best available at the moment and so do many others online.

You can buy it through total pda at

http://www.totalpda.co.uk/TomTom-Navigator-3-Software.aspx

The official website for tomtom is www.tomtom.com

Getting it all working

Install TOMTOM on your PDA 1st, and copy map(s) that you will use.

It is quite easy to get to work, connect the cables as the instructions show you.

The only things that I think you need to know extra, are, the Infrared sender needs to be right next to the IR on the PDA, if you look at the PDA the right side up, how you would normally hold it, on the left-side there is a small red window if you like! Its near the silver button on the top left side, basically get the HAICOM IR thing as close as you can to that, mine is almost touching!

Mine didn’t work if it was over an inch away.

Your PDA should be setup as follows:

Get to the main screen on your PDA

Click start – Settings – then click the connections tab.

Click Beam

Make sure the Receive all incoming beams is NOT CHECKED!!!!

Press OK and then the ‘X’ icon.

Then do the following

Click start – Settings – then click the System Tab

Click GPS – then click the GPS TAB, in the 1st dropdown menu choose ‘haicom’ and the 2nd choose your port as ‘S2410 IRDA2410’

That should really be about it fire up TOMTOM and give it a while, 10mins is usually enough to find some satellites the 1st time you start it, it takes much longer the 1st time! Sometimes upto 40mins!

*****NOTE!

For people with a Heated windscreen, the GPS receiver needs to be away from these! Some people have problems, however, my Fiesta has a heated front screen and appears to have no problems myself.. I Don’t know, I just know that some people have been effected!

If your really stuck goto www.totalpda.co.uk and they have forums where people help each other on the products above and more!

Hope that is of some help! –Steve – Coolpot_1@yahoo.com
