Playing in MUD

What ARE MUDs??

'MUD' stands for Multi-User Dungeon or Multi-User Dimension. They are games in which you play the role of a character of your creation, and explore a world of dragons and wizards, or spaceships and phazers, or whatever the author imagined. Written entirely in text, you use your imagination to transport yourself to a world where anything can happen. And, you can talk and play with people from around the world!

MUD clients

To access a MUD, you need to use Telnet, or one of the many MUD clients. zMUD is the best MUD client that I know of.

The BEST MUDs

Deratia is a brand-new mordor-based MUD. It's so new, it isn't even open for the public yet. However, it's got a lot of promise--it could be one of the best MUDs of all time. Go Here for the unofficial Deratia website.

Probably one of the most successful mordor-based MUDs, Aalynor's Nexus is a rich roleplaying environment with a lot of challenge and rewards, especially for good roleplayers. A definate winner, this is a must-try for hardcore roleplayers and mordor-lovers looking for something a bit different.

Genocide

Genocide is a very unique MUD. For normal players, there are no levels to gain. You don't pick a class/race at player creation and stick with it. Instead, it's a complete war between players. No monsters at all. In a large room with many war types, Genocide is great for when you want some blood-rushing action. Try it out, it's the best of its genre.

Panumbra

Panumbra is a free graphical MUD in the first person point of view. Currently, the demo is available on the website. It isn't near as complete as the full version will be, but it looks like it's going to be great. It runs on java, so the only downloading you need is if you need a better browser. They reccomend Microsoft IE, since it runs faster.

Monarchy

While on the subject of Shareplay games (Panumbra), Monarchy should be mentioned. This is a browser-based strategy game in which you build and maintain a kingdom and fight your way to the top. Highly recommended! Click the Panumbra link above to check it out.
