| Two-time former Oscar nominee John Lithgow ("The World
According to Garp," "Terms of Endearment"), who recently
earned an Emmy nomination for his work on "3rd Rock from the
Sun," portrays one of four aliens on a mission to learn everything
they can about what they consider to be the most unimportant of
planets: Earth (the "3rd rock"). The comedy premiered in January 1996 and was quickly hailed by critics as the breakout hit of the 1995-96 season. It scored impressively in the ratings, improving its time period (Tuesdays, 8:30-9 p.m. ET), building on its lead-in and becoming the 16th-highest-rated series of the season among adults 18-49, the demographic coveted by advertisers. |  | ||
| Lithgow, as the high commander of the alien expedition, assumes
the human body and identity of Dick, the patriarch of the
Solomon family and a professor of physics at an Ohio university.
Dick finds himself strangely attracted to Dr. Mary Albright
(two-time Emmy winner Jane Curtin, "Kate & Allie," "Saturday
Night Live"), with whom he shares an office and a secretary,
Nina (Simbi Khali, "She TV"). Other members of the expedition observing human behavior by posing as Solomon family members include Sally (Kristen Johnston, "The Lights"), an alien occupying a sexy female human body; laconic Harry (French Stewart, "Star Gate"); and Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, "Angels in the Outfield"), an adult alien suffering as puberty affects his teenage human form. Mrs. Dubcek (Elmarie Wendel, "The Trials of Rosie O'Neill") is their landlady. |  | ||
