1998 marked the 10th year of my immigration from Anqing, Anhui to northcentral New Jersey (more than 7000 miles/13600 km away), It was some 40 years after my great-grandfather made the trip. To mark the anniversay, my parents and I made the pilgrimage back to Anqing which brought back many old memories and created new ones, an experience I will never forget. After living outside of China for most of my life, it was a cultural shock when I first landed in China. The trip helped refresh my culture and see the part of China I never knew existed. China was very different than what I had imagined it to be, changing almost every year.
