Be a Brigadista

Join the Venceremos Brigade in Cuba

July 25 to August 9, 1997

The Venceremos Brigade has worked in solidarity with the Cuban people for over twenty-eight years. It was the first group to break through the blockade to bring large numbers of people to Cuba and has been a symbol of resistance to U.S. policy ever since. The Brigade has brought over 7,000 people to the island to see the truth, not through the eyes of the U.S. State Department, but for themselves.

The centerpiece of the Brigade is working side by side with the Cuban people to make a real contribution to Cuba and to learn about the island through the day-to-day experience of work. Solidarity work this year will take place in the women led La Guinera Cooperative. In two weeks you'll also:

*Meet with government, women, labor and youth leaders in intense dialogues.

*Go to Cuba's beaches and dance to Cuba's world famous music.

*See how Cuba provides a model educational and health system.

*Explore the African roots of Cuban culture and religion.

*Stroll the streets of Havana, talking to its residents and seeing its historic sites.

Most of all, you'll learn why Cubans persevere and resist changing their system to please anyone but themselves. And, if you're like previous brigadistas, the experience will forever influence your political development and the movements you are a part of.

A special highlight of the 1997 contingent will be the opportunity to participate in two important events. The International Youth Festival, organized by the Cuban Union of Young Communists, is expected to bring thousands of youth from all over the world to Cuba to debate the issues impacting youth internationally and to generate solidarity towards Cuba. And, an international conference on Neoliberalism and the Global Economy, sponsored by the Confederation of Cuban Workers, will be a major event towards forging alternatives to an increasingly oppressive world order.
