Playing for Laughs: The funny thing about
David Duchovny, who
stars this summer in the end-of-the-world
sci-fi comedy Evolution,
is he doesn't think he's funny.
"I think I maybe have a
sense of humor," the always dry
Duchovny muses on the Santa Monica set of
Evolution. "Maybe
I'm funny, but not in terms of physical
comedy. In this film, it's
more like a performance I would give on
Saturday Night Live--
more movie-like."
Of course, when he gets a chance to play
droll on The X-Files,
he's quietly hysterical, which is
precisely why director Ivan
Reitman tapped him to help Julianne
Moore, Orlando Jones
and Seann William Scott save the world
from rapidly evolving
alien creatures.
Wrestling with extraterrestials for
months on Reitman's watch
may not seem like a stretch from
Duchovny's day job, but he
calls it work.
"One of the great pleasures
of acting," says Duchovny, "is
getting away from whatever the hell
bothers you. That's the
hidden perk. Although I would say that
even if a movie is goofy
or funny, it's not goofy or funny to
make. I felt uncomfortable
and challenged, which is good."
In order for Evolution to work, the
aliens--who evolve throughout
the movie from microbes to plants to
crustaceans to birds t
primates--have to be just as funny
as Duchovny.
"In Aliens 3, the aliens
looked cool," he says, "and the
fact
that people didn't laugh didn't make it a
failure--but in this case
it would. For example, today I've been
fighting with a big blue
monkey--and that's not even on the
set!"
But Duchovny's days of alien-chasing may
be numbered.
"I don't think there will be
aliens in the next movie I do," he
says. "It's going to start to be
suspect. I need to go to a
shaman and be healed of this energy that
keeps attracting
movies with aliens."
