This sign, in my flower bed, was painted for me by my sister, Sue
TREES
I think that I shall never see
Sergeant Joyce Kilmer
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made my fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
1886-1918
What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants, in sap and leaf and wood,
In love of home and loyalty
And far-cast thought of civic good---
His blessings on the neighborhood
Who in the hollow of His hand
Holds all the growth of all our land---
A nation's growth from sea to sea
Stirs in his heart who plants a tree.
Henry Cuyler Bunner
1855-1896
