Well here it is, my first homepage. I wanted to do this for some time now, but never got around to it. This page would have been impossible for me to create all on my own. So a BIG thank you goes out to my daughter Helana, for making this page possible.
Hello
to all my online friends in irc, flipside, icq, msn and also to my family and friends.
I'm orginally from Newfoundland. In December 1993 I left NF and moved to Vancouver Island, BC and May,2002 I moved to Fort St. John, BC. I love to surf the internet, play games in flipside, and to chat with other displaced newfies in #newfoundland channel in Mirc. I also enjoy using icq very much, it's a great way to stay in touch with family and friends. Seeing that this is my first homepage, I'm going to make it all about Newfoundland. I hope you enjoy my page and be sure to sign my guest book before you leave or feel free to email me. :-) Check back often as this page is constantly under construction.
The NFLD Flag
In this flag, the primary colours of red, gold and blue are placed against a background of white to allow it to stand out clearly.
White is representative of snow and ice
Blue represents the Sea
Red represents human effort, and
Gold our confidence in ourselves.
The Blue section, most reminiscent of the Union Jack, represents our Commonwealth heritage which has so decisevely shaped our present. The Red section and Gold section, larger than the others, represents our future. The two triangles outlined in portray the mainland and island parts of our porvince reaching forward together. A golden arrow points the way to what we believe will be a bright future. But the design of the flag encompasses much more symbolism then this. For example, the Christian Cross, the Beothuck and naskapi ornamentation, the outline of the maple leaf in the centre of the flag, a triumphant figure and our place in the space age. The image of the trident stands out. This is to emphasize our continued dependence on the fishery and the resources of the sea.
Hung as a banner, the arrow assumes the aspect of a sword which is to remind us of the sacrifice of our War Veterans.
Since the whole flag resembles a Beothuck pendant as well as all of the above, the design takes us from our earliest beginnings and points us confidently forward. It therefore, mirrors our past, present and future.
The flag was officially adopted on June 6, 1980.
The NFLD Bird
Puffins can live for more than 30 years, if they're lucky!
A puffin can fly about 40 miles an hour, and will beat its wings about 300 to 400 times a minute. Puffins usually return to the same burrow and nest with the same mate year after year.
Where soil conditions permit, puffins can tunnel eight feet or more underground when excavatinga burrow. It is estimated that there are about 6 million pairs of puffins in the world.
The NFLD Dog
A Newfoundland puppy should never be bought on impulse. Like pups of many breeds, they are irresistible. Unfortunately, however, too many Newfoundlands end up in dog pounds or abandoned
when that "cute little teddy bear" grows into a 150 pound dog who won't stay out of the swimming pool. Newfs are heavy seasonal shedders, and due to the loose lip flews, they drool _a lot_ and can sling slobber up to 20 feet. While they can be kept out doors in the coldest weather, they prefer to be in the house, close to their family, so they are not the breed for someone who is house proud. If you really want to buy a Newfoundland puppy, try to visit a kennel or breeder first to meet one of these giant dogs in person. Spend some time with adult Newfs, then decide if this is still the right breed for
you.
The Pitcher Plant
The Pitcher Plant is found exclusively in swamps and bogs.
Bogs are poor in nutrients and the Pitcher Plant has evolved leaves that are shaped like pitchers. These pitchers trap water. The plant excretes a sweet substance into the trapped water. This sweet smelling water attracts insects into the pitcher. The insects drown, then decompose and the Pitcher Plant acquires their the nutrients through osmosis.
