Sofia
My native city of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It does not have the boulevards of Hausmann's Paris, nor it has L'Enfant's avenues of Washington, DC. It can not boast the exclusivity of Manhattan or the romantics of Vienna. But it is so very special to me. For there I lived my youth, I dreamt of deeds of valour, and I first fell in love.
Known since Roman times, Sofia survived the stormy history of the Balkans undergoing numerous transformations. Today, when my city has changed so tremendously, I find it worthwhile to have a look back through the aquarelles of Josef Oberbauer. Painted in the 1880's and 1890's this small collection gives me a glimpse at sights that have long disappeared and keeps me priceless memories of my city.
Now, having lived so far for
so long, every day I crave of being able to roam the freshly washed
streets of my springtime city in an early Saturday morning.
This
small gallery is my tribute to the city where I grew up.
