Her Mother says: My seventh child was born to us in 1872 in our hometown of Wytheville VA. My husband, Judge William Holcombe Bolling, and I, Sarah White Bolling, brought Edith up in a loving home. Our family has a strong history, one that we need not be a shamed of. We can trace out lineage back to Pocahontas and John Rolf. Edith did not leave town until she turned 12. Dear Edith was a rather shy young girl and so instead of going to school like the rest of our children she was taught by my husband’s mother, Ann Bolling. Edith and her grandmother always had a special relationship, they were very close. When Edith turned 15 we sent her off to Martha Washington College for her to pursue her interests in music. Being unused to such a structured system and schedule, Edith stayed there only a year. The next year we sent her to the Richmond Female Seminary, there, I believe, she did much better. Unfortunately we could no afford to send her there for a second year. I think that there are some who would look down on my Edith because she had so little schooling, but I, and all those that really know Edith, know that she is a very smart girl. |
