I joined the Black Swamp Woodcarvers Club in 1989 and have been a faithful member ever since. My goal that year was to find something to occupy an 11 year old's summer. He didn't join till a year later but I succeeded in finally finding what I had been looking for most of my life: something artistic and creative that left me feeling great when I finished a piece. My first carving was Esmerelda Elephant, out of "Carving Animal Caricatures" by Elma Waltner. I used a chunk of 2 x 4 I found in the shed, an exacto knife and hot glue but it came out looking like it should and I loved it. Of course, you keep your first carving forever and I put it on display at every show! |
