My name is Melissa Dunn. I live in Kentucky but I worked for MTV networks.... thats right a Kentucky Hillbilly worked for the hippest music station in the world.... How did this little southern girl get such an excellent job ??? The answer to that question may be best understood upon reading my book - A Year in the Life of Cyber Junky - which is still in the works.
Currently I am scratching my chin and looking back over the year of 1996 and trying to figure out what happened to me. I was unemployed due to the dreaded "corporate downsizing" but recently got a part-time (hopefully soon to be full time) job at a local ISP (internet service provider) as the macintosh technical expert (ooops did they make a mistake...hehehe). I am also working at a small training school teaching internet classes (mostly HTML ...don't go by this page). In my spare time I take a C++ class and rollerblade, play on my PPC 9500/150 and read. I consider that my make-up is hip nerd or some may say hippy-nerd (seems to have been a theme in my life)..... I am tinkering with the possibility that biomolecular modeling should be my next career, and I am hoping that I will be able to pursue my dream of moving to the west coast and getting a job in a science field. I also would like to design web pages as a bit of fun and release from the stress of everyday life.
I started my career in the sciences in 1983 at Centre College where I majored in biology and minored in english. Being a typical science geek I also was interested in computers - but I was not able to concentrate on them as I was more into the human body (some things never change). My interest in computers was spurred on more in graduate school as I learned how easy they can make the life of an aspiring research lab rat....
I started graduate school in 1989 after working in a Toxicology lab for 2 years. I joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and began to study all things molecular. I joined a laboratory in the Summer of '89 working on a cancer-related topic and stayed there through my graduate career.
After receiving my Ph.D., I stayed at the University and continued to work as a cancer researcher at the Markey Cancer Center. My post-doctorial study was to examine the effects of electromagnetic fields on oncogenes (cancer-related genes). I continued this field of study until April 1996 when I joined the crew at MTV. You might be scratching your head and asking "how did a cancer researcher from Kentucky end up working as a computer geek at MTV??? " The answer is really very simple once you understand the powers and the magic of being online.... In a word I got my job via the interactive life and magic of CuSeeMe... oh the powers of the internet god!!! So Check out CUSM for yourself and see where the power of online leads you.......
