My Dog Croatan |

About the name... |
Croatan is named after the "lost colony" near the present day North Carolina/Virginia border. The colony was established and the ship went back to England for supplies. When the ship returned, all the settlers were gone! There was no sign of violence or mass death. The word 'cro' was carved on a fence post and 'croatan' was carved on a tree. Since my dog was found as a 12 to 15 week old puppy living under a house with no mom and no other puppies, we named her Croatan because she lost her colony! |

I have found the word spelled Croatan and Croatoan. There was an island named Croatoan and also a tribe of Native Americans. There are various theories as to what happened. Some blame a drought, others say they moved, and others say they were killed by or assimilated into the Crotoan tribe and Lumbee tribes. |

I now know that three sylables is one too many for a dog name! |
