The Battle of Waterloo
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
     Historical Overview

In 1815, Napolean was freed from his exile from France. He returned to France, regained his former power and then proceeded to reorganize his former military might. By June other nations of the world such as Belgium, Netherlands, Russia as well as England had formed an alliance to oust Napolean from his throne.

       Battle Overview

In early June, 1815 Napoleon led his armies on a campaign to capture Brussels. Napoleon and his armies however met a
Prussian force as well as an English force to stop them. Napoleon first defeated the Prussian force and detached 33,000 men under Marshal Grouchy to keep them away from the impending battle with the English. There are currently two major reasons percieved to be reasons for Napoleon's loss in the battle with the English. The first being that Grouchy did not quite do his job and also could not help Napoleon in the actual fighting becausde he mistook the sound of guns firing for the sound of thunder. The reason for this was that over the past several days a cold front had been moving through the area. Cold fronts cause thunderstorms which made Grouchy mistake the sound of guns versus the sound of thunder. The other reason that manyh historians believe help led to Napoleon's loss at the battle was that initially Napoleon was not able to make his attack as early as he wanted to. He could not attack because it had been raining heavily for several days and thhe ground was too boggy to make an adequate attack on especially with cavalry or artillery. Those were the two main causes of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, both of which were caused by weather. Coincidence? I think not. Weather has affected many historical events throughout history. Just to name a few, D-Day was pushed back a day because violent weather prevented an invasion force from crossing the Atlantic safely. Also, the Spanish Armada had to stop to obtain repairs, giving the English time to organize their forces to meet the oncoming invasion.
