The Sorrow Of The Albanian Women
by Nicolas Mirakaj-Alempijevic
The history
of the Albanian people has been one of foreign invasions and domination. The centuries of
Ottoman rule, and five decades of Stalinist imposed isolation, have left the Albanians cut
off from each other and from the rapid developments of the world, particularly in this
century.
While Albanians were able to secure the existence of an independent state, most of it's
territories where left out of this state and put under the control of Belgrade and Athens.
Kosova, where over 90% of the population is Albanian was given to Serbia by the Great
Powers. Today scenes like the one depicted in this painting have become an every day
occurrence as Serbia has engaged itself in the harshest violent crackdown against the
Albanian population in order to crush their aspirations for freedom and independence.
This page is dedicated to all the Albanian women who have given their love
to their sons and daughters, and have given courage and strength to their men while they
suffered in silence.
