Notes on Herbs

Introduction

More and more gardeners are beginning to buy and enjoy plants for their interesting uses and associations - magical, romantic, or historical - as well as for their more obvious attractions. Herbs - loosely defined as plants used for culinary, medicinal or aromatic purposes - have fascinating histories, memorable aromas, and a diversity of uses. Herbs are a gift from nature. They are plants that can easily be grown in the smallest of gardens or in pots with little difficulty. Herbs include leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, berries, seeds and gums. They have been the main source of medicine throughout human history and are still widely used today. For thousands of years they have been used to help maintain good health and until the arrival of modern science, they were even regarded as magical.

Making herbal remedies at home, using plants gathered from your own garden or window box, is extremely pleasant and satisfying. It is also very therapeutic. Home grown and freshly dried herbs are normally more potent than commercially available specimens and they also provide a constant array of healing aroma's to enjoy.  Here, for anyone interested in herbs, is a website to provide knowledge and inspiration for beginners and established enthusiasts alike.

Warning: Although Herbal medicine is generally regarded as safe, certain herbs can be toxic in high dosages and should be used with caution. Many herbs are unsuitable for use in certain conditions. If unexpected symptoms occur or existing symptoms worsen, stop treatment immediately and consult with a qualified practitioner or G.P. Always be certain you are using the correct plant as many can be confused - if in doubt, don't use it!
