I am originally from Boston where I was a professional musician for several years during the late 1970's and earlier 80's. Being the youngest member of my first cover band we played the New England club circuit. At the time Boston was the hub for music. Some of the greats called Boston Home, band such as Boston, The Cars, Aerosmith, Extreme to name just a few.
Having rehearsed at the Cambridge Music Complex just outside of Boston I had the opportunity to meet several members of the Cars since they rehearsed there also. During that time my primary basses were an Ovation Magnum with active pickups and on board E.Q. but my favorite bass was my 1981 Maple Rickenbacker 4001 Stereo Bass. I bought it at the time for $400.00 and sold it for half that amount. I loved that bass. My primary rig was a Fender Bassman with a tube head. I had two of them at the time. Pretty simple when compared to todays standards.
Why this site? Well recently I was feeling nostalgic and purchased the Cars Live DVD from their first and only european tour. The footage was from a German televison show called Musicladen during 1979. For the first few songs the late Ben Orr was playing a Vox Constellation Bass that caught my attention. Upon seeing it I wanted to learn more about it and more so, I wanted to own one. Incidentally, I had read that the Vox Bass which he owned was purchased from a pawn shop in Boston but unfortunately was lost along with several other basses when his aapartment caught fire. What a loss!
Though I have not yet acquired a Vox Constellation I have begun collectiing other Vox basses. My first two Vox purchases are two 1966 Wyman Basses.. Since there is little information about Vox guitars I though I would post some pictures of the basses so others who may need to compare for reference purposes can do so. I learned that there are very little photos available on the internet too.
