1986 Kawasaki 1000 Police Special

"Get on your bad motor scooter and ride!"

Hi! My name is Jeff, and this is my 1986 Kawasaki 1000 Police Special. When these pictures were taken a couple years ago, it had been modified to look like an earlier model of the same bike - more like a 1980 than an 86. It originally had the full fairing with spotlights integrated in it next to the headlight - one blue & one red for pursuit. I have recently converted it back to the full fairing look, but have retained the stand up windshield for my 1982 model, which is now nearing completion from a partial rebuild.

This bike (the 86) was a cruiser in service with the Golden Gate division of the California Highway Patrol until it was damaged in a roll over accident in 1996. As is common with fleet vehicles, by the time it was sold at auction, it was pretty much canibalized for parts. The engine, transmission and frame were still original and intact (and in great shape), but a lot of the little thijngs were gone. To make a long story short, another Police parts bike and a year later, and I've got a super smooth - mega powerful cruiser with the best balance characteristics of any bike I've been on. I have maybe $2000 into this bike and it had around 40k on it when I bought it. It now has over 125k on it with no work being ever done on it except routine maintenance. It still has a lot of power and torque, gets over 40 mpg and doesn't burn a drop of oil. This is one tough machine!

In case you're wondering, the seat is not the stock solo saddle, it's from a 1976 Kawasaki 900 LTD. Fit right on with no major modification. Please see below for details about the seat before you just fire off emails about it. Download the pictures first, then ask if something's not clear. I get a lot of questions about this from people who are too lazy to view the pictures first.
Of course, it no longer has the siren & pursuit lights, but it still looks so much like a cop's bike, practically no one drives rudely around me when I'm on the road. That alone makes this a great bike to commute on. The drivers here are, for the most part, absolute dorks. If you want to know something about this bike that isn't covered here, send me an e-mail. When I get some free time, I might write you back. ;)

Now, some more pictures!

I've had a lot of requests for information about how my seat is mounted, and how the pegs are fitted for the rear passenger.
If you want pictures of these, download the ZIP file (about 62K - three greyscale pictures in jpg format).
If you want to convert your bike to a passenger capable ride, I am looking at doing the reverse.
I want to keep my seat, but if you want to get rid of your solo seat &/or rear radio carrier, let me know.
I have a small pile of parts for these bikes, and maybe we can work out a deal.

BTW, I've just purchased another Kawasaki Police 1000. This time, an '82 K1-P1 in nearly full battle gear. It's so complete, that I had to tape over the blue & red spots in the fairing for the trip home. I'll post more info here as the project progresses.

You're a rider already,
make sure you're noticed!
