I have been involved with VW's since I was 16. My first VW was a '63 ghia that I got in 1970. That was followed by my first race car, a '67 ghia. My dad and I built it, with him doing most of the work. It had 92mm pistons from Deano Dynosoars, along with their dual valve springs. I still remember the purple valve retainers! The trans was mostly stock, except for extra shims for the diff; something that Gene Berg calls a poor man's posi. The car ran in A/modified compact and was not that fast, but it was a crowd pleaser and we won our share of trophies (we were the only car in our class).
I always said that someday we would build another car, but this time it would not be a dual purpose car like our street legal ghia. Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1987 and I lost interest in building the car. I never lost interest in VW's; owning over the years, a '67 ghia convertible, '63 sunroof bug, '63 single cab, '68 bus, '71 fastback, '65 squareback 1500S (filled side windows, rear scoops, flared fenders), a '73 fastback (bought new when I worked as a mechanic at a VW dealership), a '78 scirocco, '84 rabbit, '90 corrado G60, '87 golf and currently, a '01 passat (along with my squareback race car, of course!).
In 1992 my brother Greg and I decided to build another race car. We had been attending VW events all over the east coast and were starting to get the fever again. We wanted something different and while we were at the Punch Buggy event at Atco, NJ, we saw Dave Kawell's awesome squareback. It inspired us to build one also, but with a few changes. Z Bros. Racing was born! Now if we only had some money.
Well, 5 years later and a lot of part scrounging, hard work, and help from my fellow VW racers, Warren Skaggs Jr. and Sr., and Dave Webster, along with machine work from Mike Blankenship, body work and top chop from Jeff Hart, and welding, roll bar and race car construction from Mark Pusley Race Cars, the Terminator T-3 finally hit the track in November, 1996 at Mt. Parkway Motorplex in Clay City, KY. The first pass was a 8.97 at 78 mph in the 1/8. Since then it has gone a 7.84 at 82mph. Not bad for a 162 hp VW motor.
