I am and have always been a gear-head. Currently I have three vehicle projects going on, two 1966 Mustangs, and a 1969 Ford F-100. Yes I am a Ford fan! The first 1966 Mustang is a CandyApple Red coupe that I have owned since 1992. When I bought it, it had a replacement 289 engine from a 67 Ford truck in it, but the car made the trip from New York to Maryland without any mechanical problems. The previous owner had the original 289 in storage, and I was able to get that motor from him and rebuild it. I rebuilt it with a 302 crankshaft, 10:1 forged pistons, a cam with split profile (260 intake .448 lift, 270 exhaust .472 lift), had the restrictive valves replaced with Chevy 1.94 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves. The engine is topped off with the original 2 barrel intake and carb. I know a 4 barrel would really wake the girl up, but with a car this light, it is plenty of power as it is. Unfortunately, due to rust problems, I had to disassemble the car to prepare for restoration, but this car is on the back burner for now while I work on the other two projects. It is stored safely in my garage though, so it's not out in the elements getting worse! The second 1966 Mustang is a Father-Daughter project. It was supposed to be a Father-Son project, but my son was not interested in classic cars and definitely not interested in the work required to turn a rust bucket into a nice ride. So his little sister got it instead, and she has been a lot more willing to work on the car than he was, so I think we are all happier this way. This car was a stripped, rolling shell, covered in rust. Thank goodness you can buy almost every peice of metal for this year Mustang, we should still be able to get it fixed up by the time my daughter is 16. Since the car came with no engine (and was originally a 6 cyl car), we saw no reason to stay "original", therefore we are upgrading to 5 lug suspension via Granada front disks, and a 9 inch rear from a 57 Fairlane. The engine/tranny combo is a 302 AOD setup from an 85 Cougar. To the left is a link to my daughters page detailing the work on this car. My next project is my "Mean Green" 1969 Ford F-100 pickup. This body style (67-72) has always been my favorite Ford truck style, and I am happy that I finally got one to play with. The truck had a reasonably sturdy body, it had some rust here and there, but nothing structural. It came with a 302 that had slipped timing and then sat with the hood up for years, so this motor was trash. I got a 351c motor and C4 trans from a 73 Mercury and put that in the truck. The engine is original, but has surprisly good power for a 30 year old engine. I guess the previous owners maintained their Mercury very well. All I have done to the engine is clean it up and repaint it Ford blue, tuned it up with plugs, wires, and points, installed a new 2 barrel carburetor, and threw on chrome valve covers and an aluminum air cleaner. The truck has been painted in 98 GMC "Emerald Green Metalic" paint. It is a beautiful color, but it was not a good paint job, so I think this will eventually have to be redone.
