The race will be preceded by two nights of practice and qualifying. All Pepsi 400 tickets will be honored on the rescheduled date. This marks the first postponement in the 39-year history of the race. Action was taken to postpone the race after Speedway representatives consulted with city and county officials and received a full description of local conditions and state-wide road closures. The fires have not directly affected the 480-acre Speedway facility. For several weeks, four Speedway-owned fire trucks and more than 30 employees have assisted in the effort to control the blazes and provide food to both firefighters and government employees working in emergency operations positions. After a disappointing start, taking a Past Champions Provisional to enter the Save Mart/Kragen 350, Bill Elliott and the Drive Thru Crew turned in a no less than awesome performace to come home in 12th position. Bill gained 1 position in the Winston Cup points standings. He is currently in 11th position, 19 points away from 10th place Dale Earnhardt. The only problem the #94 seemed to have today was his starting position and the race wasn't long enough. Even though Bill managed only a 12th place finish, he had an outstanding run as he moved from 43rd to as high as 3rd. When Jerry brought out the caution on lap 15, Bill did short pit and it payed off but Bill just ran out of time. He was still marching to the front. He also cought a break when the #26 spun while Bill was running 22nd. This allowed him to make his stop under yellow and get back in sequence. He came out 18th and went from there. A real quite day on the track for Bill, just a few dings in the rear bumper and no spins, and hardly a mention from the broadcasters. He worked very quitely all day. Again, considering Bill starting spot, today was a great run. He is in line for the Exide all charged up award and also moved past Schrader upto 11th in the points standings. Bill's pit stall was located on what they call Gilligan's Island at Sears Point. Most pit stalls are ouside of turn 11 while Gilligan's Island is on the inside. It did not seem to effect his pit stops too much. Let's get 'em at Daytona! (6-28-98) Bill Elliott's crew nicknamed their road racing Ford the S.S. Minnow, a reference to the boat which sank, stranding Gilligan and his friends on "Gilligan's Island." The idea for the nickname came when Elliott failed to qualify for the race and had to take the former champion's provisional -- the final spot in the 43-car lineup. The nine cars at the back of the field had to pit across the track from the main pit lane on what is called "The Island." (ESPN) (6-28-98) I still understand that Setzer is to drive a Elliott Ford at Daytona next week under the lights. The Thunderbird he ran at Talladega has been reskinned and is now a Taurus, so if he is there he will be in a Taurus.
