Dead at 106: Oldsmobile

The last car from America's oldest car company rolled off the line Thursday April 29th in Lansing, Mich.

The last Alero to come off the line Thursday in Lansing is destined for a home in the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, named for Ransom Eli Olds, who co-founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in August 1897.

The last 500 Aleros produced are painted metallic cherry red and carry special Final 500 markings. Special final edition versions of Oldsmobile's Bravada SUV and Silhouette minivan are also being offered by those Oldsmobile dealers that remained.

Goodbye to Dad's Olds, 103 year old name sake bites the global dust

December 12, 2000 will be remembered as a sad day in Automotive History, because on this day General Motors announced the end of an Icon. The name Oldsmobile and everything it represents to its loyal customers will go the way Plymoth went before it. Oldsmobile, one of six car lines offered within the GM family, is the latest victim of a world gone global. In today's competitive world, it's all about value, selection, availability, reliability and price -- things that other carmakers in North America, Europe and Japan produce in spades at similar or better prices than GM. It is also a victim of a company that, by its own admission, has too much product and increasingly, too few customers. Despite investment in new models in the past several years, including the Alero, the new and improved Bravada S/UV and the luxury Aurora, GM decided Tuesday that Oldsmobile, as a name, simply can't keep up anymore.

Goodbye Cutlass July 2, 1999

It was a sad day for the Cutlass as workers at the Oklahoma City General Motors plant look on as the last Oldsmobile Cutlass rolls off the assembly line Friday, July 2, 1999. Over 11.9 million of the cars were built in the past 38 years.
