AMERICAN BEAUTY TRIUMPHS IN THE 1999 ONLINE MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY AWARDS

AMERICAN BEAUTY led the Online Motion Picture Academy Awards with nine wins, including awards for Best Picture, Best Actor for Kevin Spacey, Best Director and Best Cinematography. MAGNOLIA, which received four awards, garnered wins for Best Supporting Actor for Tom Cruise and Best Supporting Actress for Julianne Moore. Best Picture nominee THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, which had received the second most nominations this year (15), found itself virtually shut out of the awards winners, receiving only one nod (for Best Adapted Screenplay).

MAGNOLIA director Paul Thomas Anderson maintains an unprecedented track record yielding two supporting awards for his film as he did with Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore in 1997 for Boogie Nights. Anderson, whose film credits total three, is becoming known for his direction of ensembles with an award for Best Ensemble on top of the two acting awards.

"We’re incredibly pleased with the roster of artists who received the awards this year," says OMPA founder Wesley Lovell. "In our fourth year of existence, the OMPA has received increased presence in both the film and internet communities. We hope that these awards continue to serve both mediums with recognition and deserved admiration." Founded in 1996, the Online Motion Picture Academy voted for nominees and winners by email and through the Online Academy website in a highly scrutinized process. Membership is comprised entirely of movie buffs, film critics, and industry figures who utilize the internet.

The Online Academy has a near-perfect 2-for-3 history on the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner. "The Online Academy was the first cultural awards organization to base its membership from the Internet and serve as an award organization for the new technology medium in an array of performing arts fields," says Lovell. This year, the OMPA deemed 334 features eligible for award consideration, including 18 documentaries and 45 Foreign Language features (eligibility is determined by a film’s appearance on the weekly box-office report for the first time during the eligiblity year).

THE PRACTICE AND FRIENDS CONQUER THE 1999 ONLINE TELEVISION ACADEMY AWARDS

Strong showings by newcomers The Sopranos, Sports Night, and Will and Grace

NEW YORK (August 29, 1999) Surprises were in store today at the announcement of The Online Television Academy Awards, broadcast live on the Internet at ICQ. The third year of awards brought together respected favorites (THE PRACTICE, ALLY McBEAL, TRACEY TAKES ON…) with this year’s brightest new lights (THE SOPRANOS, WILL AND GRACE, SPORTS NIGHT). As always, the OTVA announced a number of suprises, including the clean sweep of the Syndication Categories by STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, whose thoughtful final season was recognized over shut-outs XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS and HERCULES.

THE PRACTICE, with ten wins (including Best Series, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Ensemble, Directing, Writing, and Guest Performer recognitions for Tony Danza and Holland Taylor), easily dominated the Drama Categories. The only other series that managed to squeeze into dramatic awards were THE SOPRANOS (Best New Drama Series, Best New Actor James Gandolfini), ER (Best Lead Actress Julianna Margulies and Supporting Actor Noah Wyle), and FELICITY (Best New Actress Keri Russell).

The Comedy Categories, however, exhibited unprecedented variety that saw FRIENDS win the big prize, Best Comedy Series, but nothing else. Two new shows made startlingly impressive showings. WILL AND GRACE took home awards for stars Eric McCormack (Best Lead Actor), Sean P. Hayes (Best New Actor), and Megan Mullally (Best New Actress), as well as the Comedy Writing category. SPORTS NIGHT, on the other hand, won the coveted Best New Comedy Series Award and, in a surprise victory, saw star Felicity Huffman garner Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and share Best New Actress (tied with Ms. Mullally). Former powerhouses FRASIER and 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN were virtually shut out (winning only guest awards for William Shatner on ROCK and Christine Baranski on FRASIER; the show that featured her character, Dr. Nora, also received the Individual Episode award).

In the Miniseries categories, JOAN OF ARC, THE RAT PACK and ALICE IN WONDERLAND received multiple nominations, and the Animated categories featured a special three-way tie between THE SIMPSONS and upstarts FUTURAMA and SOUTH PARK.

"The Online Television Academy is again at the vanguard of organizations who recognize innovative quality programming first," said OTVA director Wesley Lovell. "New programs like WILL AND GRACE, SPORTS NIGHT, THE SOPRANOS, and FUTURAMA are among the best on television, and our voting critics have again brought accolades to new and exciting talent."

Among the networks, it was a virtual three-way dead heat among NBC (19), ABC (18) and HBO (16). CBS (11) and Fox (10) trailed distantly behind, while cable upstart Comedy Central (3) made an impression with wins for SOUTH PARK and WIN BEN STEIN’S MONEY.
