September 8, 2005: My official review of A Sound of Thunder is now online. The flick was dumped into only 816 theaters, where it earned a paltry 4-day gross of $1.1 million. In other words, it played to mostly empty theaters. I know - I was the only person in attendance when I caught the flick. Anyway, read my review.
August 29, 2005: Good and bad news for Ed fans. First the bad. Warner Bros. is unceremoniously releasing the long-delayed A Sound of Thunder on Sept. 2, 2005 after nearly two years on the shelf. Labor Day weekend has long been considered a "dumping ground" for studios looking to unload turkeys, so this once promising project may not be a jewel in Ed's crown. (If you look at my post from November 2003, you'll see that I called into question the wisdom of working with director Peter Hyams.)
Now the good news. It is rumored that Looking for Kitty will hit theaters in 2006. Also next year, Ed will release his new picture as writer/director. It's called The Groomsmen and it co-stars Brittany Murphy, Jay Mohr, and Matthew Lillard. More on this as it becomes available.
February 20, 2005 First, the good news. Ed's appearance on "Will and Grace" was extended. He has appeared in two episodes so far and may appear in a few more. Keep watching to find out. Now the bad news. A Sound of Thunder - Ed's long-delayed science fiction epic with Ben Kingsley - is now officially off the release schedule again. It seemed like the March 2005 release date was firm, but Warner Brothers pulled it last week. It is not known when, if ever, the movie will hit screens. It's possible that a straight-to-video release in being planned instead. More as it develops. For now, though, here's an exclusive look at the poster for Ed's upcoming picture The River King:
February 3, 2005 - Ed will make a guest appearance on the February 10 episode of "Will and Grace." He will play a new flame for Grace. This is a one-time only appearance, so don't expect the romance to last. However, this is a rare opportunity to see on TV. Get those Tivos ready!
December 18, 2004 - Ed's most recent project is co-writing the screenplay for Flight of the Phoenix, which is in theaters now. Please read my full-length review at www.aisleseat.com
October 11, 2004 - Seen that trailer for Flight of the Phoenix yet? This Fox pic - starring Dennis Quaid, Tyrese Gibson, and Giovanni Ribisi - is a major holiday release. Ed is one of the writers who took a pass at the script, and at this point he is retaining a screenwriting credit.
Sept. 10, 2004 - Once again, A Sound of Thunder has been pushed back. It is now scheduled for release on March 11, 2005 - almost a full year after its original release date. As we all know, when movies are bounced around like this, it's usually because they're bad. Hopefully this is not the case, but we will have to wait and see.
July 14, 2004 - If you've been waiting to see A Sound of Thunder, you're going to have to wait a little longer. Warner Bros. has pushed the release date back yet again, which is a sign that they have little confidence in the film. The new release date is October 8, 2004. Also, Ed's latest as a writer/director - Looking For Kitty - continues to seek theatrical distribution. Reviews from Variety and the Hollywood Reporter were not particularly good. Both mentioned that the film doesn't seem to have much box office potential. Sounds like it will mirror the situation with Ash Wednesday. I'll keep you posted if any video deals are made.
May 9, 2004 - Some more news has trickled in on Looking For Kitty. This is officially the new Ed Burns film - he is the writer, director, and star. The movie is debuting this weekend at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Ed plays a private investigator helping a high school baseball coach (David Krumholtz)locate his wife, who has run off with a rock star. Looking for Kitty runs 105 minutes and is currently seeking US distribution. I'm working on getting some more info on this film, so check back for updates.
April 22, 2004 - More new Ed films on the way! Currently in post-production is Looking for Kitty, which stars Ed and David Krumholtz. It's being produced by Ed's company, Marlboro Road Gang. Details are sketchy right now, but we should see this flick sometime in late 2004. I'll have more on it soon. The River King is currently filming in Nova Scotia. It's based on a novel by Alice Hoffman about a cop investigating the suicide of a student. Finally, there's the Currently Untitled Football Movie, in which Ed will play Cam Stonehouse, a former Super Bowl MVP who disappears into retirement. A decade later, he's convinced to return to the game by a Sports Illustrated writer. He joins a local team (The Townies) and plots to work his way back to the NFL, specifically the New England Patriots. Kind of like a football version of that Dennis Quaid movie The Rookie. Last but not least, A Sound of Thunder is still on the schedule for an August release. Don't forget to check out the latest at: THE AISLE SEAT.
April 1, 2004 - ED PLAYS BATMAN: Here's an exclusive scoop - and a big one too! As you may have heard, director Christopher Nolan is doing the next Batman film. His star - Christian Bale - recently dropped out of the project, and Nolan has hired Ed to step into the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. A source at Warner Brothers sent me an EXCLUSIVE PHOTO of Ed in the Batsuit, taking during a wardrobe test. You won't find this picture anywhere else. Click to see it: ED BURNS AS BATMAN.
January 29, 2004 - Here's some serious scoop for you about two BRAND NEW Ed Burns films. First, Ed has a cameo (as himself) in a romantic comedy called The Breakup Artist that is in post-production as we speak. This is an independent film, so it will probably be looking for a distributor soon. I was going to post pictures but have not yet been able to approach the producers to get permission. However, you can check out the official website to see them and learn more about the flick: www.thebreakupartist.com. Also, it was just announced that Ed is producing a football drama (no title yet) to be released in 2005. He is only producing, and information is sketchy at this point. Naturally, I will bring you the latest as it becomes available.
January 27, 2004 - To increase interactivity with my readers, I have started a BLOG, a.k.a. an online journal. I encourage you to check it out and leave your thoughts on movies - Ed's or otherwise. Click on the BLOG to be magically transported there.
January 20, 2004 - How's it going everybody? I know you've been itching for a sneak peak at A Sound of Thunder, and I am happy to oblige. I've got the first official production still from the upcoming film for you here: Click Me! I'll post more as they become available. If you like this picture and want to see more, show the love by visiting THE AISLE SEAT. Your support makes this site possible. If we get enough hits on that site, I'll be able to give you some MAJOR scoop soon, so please take a trip over there. Peace.
January 11, 2004 - It's time again to recap the best and worst films of the previous year. Was Ed's Confidence one of the best? One of the worst? Did it show at all? Find out by reading my lists of the Ten Best and Worst Pictures of 2003 at: THE AISLE SEAT
January 6, 2004 - Happy New Year! Unfortunately, we start off with some bad news. Warner Brothers has decided to pull A Sound of Thunder from its April release date and push it back to August 20 instead. Late August is not, shall we say, a prestigious time of the year for movies, which may suggest the studio has little faith in the film. Hopefully this is not the case. Their official reason for the move is to avoid competition with other action flicks being released in April. Regardless, A Sound of Thunder has officially been delayed. More as it develops...
December 7, 2003 - Here's a hot lead for you: Preproduction has begun on a movie called The River King, to which Ed has been attached to star. Based on a novel by Alice Hoffman, the film will be directed by Nick Willing and would be released in 2005 at the earliest. I'm looking into getting more specific info on this title, so stay tuned. Also, things may be turning around for this site, thanks to your support. However, December is a crucial month. If we can keep things going strong, this site can live on in 2004. If not...well, we're out of here in January. So please continue to support The Ed Burns Site by patronizing THE AISLE SEAT and I promise to get you all the latest scoop on Ed's movies as they become available. And if this site makes it into the new year, I will have a special surprise as my way of saying "thank you"!
November 23, 2003 - Here's the latest on Ed's next film, A Sound of Thunder: It's based on a beloved short story by Ray Bradbury. Set in the future, Ed plays Dr. Travis Ryer, who goes on a time travel trip back to the Prehistoric Age to hunt dinosaurs. Ben Kingsley plays the developer of the time travel machine, who institutes strict rules about the voyages in order to keep hunters from inadvertently changing the course of evolution. Naturally, during Ryer's trip, the rules are broken, and when he returns to the future, the world is vastly different from how he left it. He then teams up with Sonia Rand (Catherine McCormack) to prevent these "time waves" from erasing mankind.
What's good about the movie? Well, Ed works with a great actor like Ben Kingsley. It also helps that the story was created by one of the great writers of our time. What's potentially bad about it? The film is being directed by Peter Hyams, a hack if there ever was one. (He also did Timecop, Sudden Death, The Relic and End of Days.) Having Hyams behind the camera does not inspire confidence in me. Hopefully, his overwrought style will not impede on what otherwise appears to be a classy project.
A Sound of Thunder opens in 2004. I am working on getting more info, as well as early publicity pictures. However, I remind you again that this site is in danger of being shut down! In fact, it's looking like that might have to happen pretty soon. You can help keep The Ed Burns Site running by visiting my other website, THE AISLE SEAT. Ads sold on that website help finance the maintainance of this one. All you need to do is visit The Aisle Seat at least once a week. Refer it to all your friends. The more hits I get there, the more ads I can sell. The more ads I sell, the easier it will be to keep The Ed Burns Site online. Time is running out, though. If I can't get things where I need to be within the next month, The Ed Burns Site will have to die an unfortunate death. So PLEASE - if you care about getting the latest, most accurate info on Ed and his movies, make a weekly stop over to The Aisle Seat. Thank you!
November 18, 2003 - Hey everybody, I have some scoop on Ed's new flick A Sound of Thunder that I hope to be able to put online later this week. In the meantime, I continue to desperately need your support. This website is in danger of being shut down permanently. In order to keep it up and running, I need everyone to hop over to THE AISLE SEAT for a few minutes and check out a few reviews. That site funds this one, so the more hits it gets, the more I can update this one. So please give it a few hits and I promise to have something about Ed's new flick online here before the weekend. Thanks!
November 2, 2003 - Congratulations to Ed and wife Christy Turlington on their birth of their first child, a baby girl. A name has not been publically released yet. However, both mother and child are healthy. Ed's next picture - the sci-fi epic A Sound of Thunder - has finished shooting and will be in theaters sometime in 2004.
October 23, 2003 - Hello everyone. Some of you may remember this site's glory days, when it was the leading werehouse for accurate, up-to-date information about the films of Ed Burns on the internet. Then it got closed down for a while. I am now trying to get it back up and running to full capacity. This is where you come in.
As a professional film critic, I have access to lots of material that gives me the freshest scoop on Ed's upcoming pictures. However, this site is supported by The Aisle Seat - my movie review website and primary gig. In order to give you the best, most reliable information on the films of Ed Burns, I need as many of you as possible to support The Aisle Seat. I won't bore you too much with the business end of things, but the more hits The Aisle Seat gets, the more I will be able to devote to this site. Websites, as you may know, can be expensive to maintain, and those little ads you see on The Aisle Seat website help cover expenses for this one.
So here's what I propose: if you are an Ed Burns fan and want to see this site blossom, please visit The Aisle Seat website (www.aisleseat.com) at least one time per week. Check it out, read a new review, enter a contest...whatever. Just do it once a week minimum. Then recommend it to your family and friends. The more hits I get, the more ads I can sell. More ads = more money to fund and maintain The Edward Burns Site properly.
All you have to do is click on the link below. Thanks for your support, and please keep checking back. I'll give you all the Ed Burns movie scoop as soon as I get it, including the 2004 release of A Sound of Thunder.
Peace,
Mike
