Grady Tripp ( Michael Douglas) is a former prodigy, a pot-smoking philandering middle-aged novelist who has stalled on a 2611-page unfinished opus titled Wonder Boys. Grady's student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) is a troubled young writer obsessed by Hollywood suicides, prone to petty thievery, and at work on his own first manuscript. Joined by Grady's sexually ambitious editor Terry Crabtree (Robert Downey Jr.), the trio careens on a wild nighttime odyssey through the streets, bars, and environs of Pittsburgh, in search of past promise, future fame, and an ever-elusive vision of redemption through art and language.
Also starring Frances McDormand as Sara Gaskel, Grady's chancellor and girlfriend, and Katie Holmes as Hannah Green, a college student who is boarding with Grady and who has a bit of a crush on him.
