does, the two fall for each other.
Reviews:
HIS BODYGUARD: After a new migrane medication called Alpha is stolen, lab security chief Mitzi Kapture is called on to guard her boss's handsome deaf son. Soon the pair is outracing bad guys, albeit slow ones, and enjoying a bath, during which she sexily cleans his bullet wounds. If you think this sounds sudsy, you're right. The teleplay was written by soap opera vet Emma Sams who evidently drew on that experience for plot and dialouge. Pass the Alpha. My score: 2 Susan Stewart - TV Guide
Scripted, oddly enough, by Dynasty's Emma Samms, bodyguard offers a peek at what might happen if La Femme Nikita stumbled onto the set of witness. Made for TV Goddess Mitzi Kapture (Silk Stalkings) plays Jenny, a security guard assigned to protect a deaf biochemist after he witnesses a violent robbery. A few half spoken, half-signed lines of dialogue later, they fall in love while running from laughably inept bad guys. Predictable, yet also goofily chaming.( B-) Kristin Balwin - Entertainment Weekly
Actress Emma Samms pens a different kind of love story.
A bystander who witnesses a crime finds himself in danger of his life. He is assigned a bodyguard and together the two solve the crime, while developing a unique relationship.
Sound original? (As in Eraser, Witness, and countless others?) No, but when you saw this plot before, did it involve a female bodyguard protecting a deaf man? And did they catch the bad guys over the Internet and use *69 to trace mystery callers?
USA excels with His Bodyguard, telling a run-of-the-mill story well. Several modern and politically correct twists to this otherwise-stale plot empower two groups (women and the hearing impaired) without appearing too much like a public service announcement.
Anthony Natale, the actor who portrays Sam, is deaf, which lends credibility to his numerous achievements on the show. He's famed for his role as the older son in Mr. Holland's Opus, and in Jerry Maguire, signing "You complete me" to his partner in an elevator.
Sam is an intelligent but stubborn engineer who works in his father's firm. Though he doesn't hear or speak, he reads lips and usually knows much more than he lets on. Despite his handicap, he drives, plays the drums and fights like a gladiator against the dangerous criminals who stole important medical information from his dad's lab.
Sam is on a mission to catch the bad guys, protect his father's company, and save his own life ... and that's where Jenny enters the picture. Though the two don't care for each other at first, they soon find they have much in common and become close.
Mitzi Kapture, an alumna of USA's Silk Stalkings, delivers a performance equally as impressive. She plays the sweet but cunning bodyguard Jenny, who shoots with chilling accuracy, wrestles weapons away from men twice her size, and whose hand-to-hand combat strategies Steven Seagal would envy. Pleasantly, she retains her femininity without the aid of spiked heels, big hair or lycra.
Not bad for a couple of characters who would be labeled by many as helpless.
His Bodyguard targets specific groups to represent in a positive light, but aims to please many more. Both the action lover and the romance buff should enjoy the movie, which achieves a nice blend of energy, emotion and education.
As part of USA's "Erase the Hate" Campaign, this two-hour drama explores some of the ways in which a hearing impaired person's life is different. We are shown how they use the phone (a typing system called TTD), some basic sign language, and we learn that most deaf people can talk but choose not to.
Similarly, the show explores the difficulties faced by women in physically demanding occupations, and portrays Jenny as neither a bimbo nor a brutejust a bodyguard. All in all, the characterization in His Bodyguard is positive and plausible, in contrast to other USA programs such as Silk Stalkings and La Femme Nikita.
Awareness and understanding were the goals of writer Emma Samms, who has acted in General Hospital, Dynasty and Models Inc. After a deaf boyfriend taught her about deaf culture and how to sign, she became aware of the lack of roles for deaf actors.
Though writing had been just a hobby before, Samms soon developed a "desire to create something that both educated and entertained the general public, with a story that included someone's 'disability' without being about that 'disability.' "
By the same token, Samms felt the casting and performance of Jenny was vital to the movie's success. "Mitzi [Kapture] brought a strength to the role that was necessary for its plausibility as well as the vulnerability that her character was hiding so well at the beginning," says Samms.
In a rare but commendable attempt at creative and educational programming, USA can rest easy knowing His Bodyguard is here.

Kapture Captures Her Audience in "His Bodyguard
It takes a little getting used to watching Mitzi Kapture in a role other than Lt. Rita Lee "Sam" Lance.
For six seasons, she played the tough, sexy detective on "Silk Stalkings" until leaving the show in 1996. While Rob Estes, who played her partner on the sleek detective series, went on to the bright lights of Fox's high-profile "Melrose Place," Kapture took some time off to focus on her family.
But now she's back -- with a vengeance.
Not only does Kapture have a starring role in USA's latest original movie, "His Bodyguard," but she also joins "Baywatch" next season. Kapture will play the strong-willed Alex Ryker, a lifeguard who acts as a consultant to the life-saving bunch of Will Rogers State Beach.
If there was any doubt of life after "Silk Stalkings," for Mitzi Kapture, it should be put to rest.
In "Bodyguard," Kapture plays a security officer at a medical laboratory who is assigned to protect a worker who witnessed a murder during a robbery. However, it's not just any worker -- it's the owner's deaf son -- and the men he saw are coming after him.
The relationship between Kapture's Jenny Farrell and Anthony Natale's Sam Ralston is different because Jenny must essentially teach herself sign language to communicate, while Sam is impatient with her efforts because he doesn't believe he needs protection. However, after an attempt on his life, the two are forced to work together to unravel the mystery around the crime -- and who is setting them up.
Kapture spoke with UltimateTV in a phone interview and tells why she was drawn to the role: "I love being able to play strong women." But beyond that, she thought the character was realistic and enjoyed the fact that she could learn something new. "I got to be introduced to the beautiful world of signing," she continues. "I just fell in love with it. I think it's one of the most sensuous languages that I've learned so far."
Kapture learned sign language specifically for the role, working with the interpreter on the set. However, her character in "His Bodyguard" is no expert in sign language, having only signed as a child.
As the film progresses, Jenny learns more about signing and is able to improve her communication with Sam.
"As my character's struggling to understand him, the audience is struggling to understand him," Kapture says of the process. She also explains how Natale described the signing process, "Speaking people do not only two things at once, but ten things at once. A lot of times they're not even looking at each other to see if the other person gotten what they've said . . . but in signing, you really have to connect."
As for "Baywatch," Kapture says she looks forward to returning to series television, especially on such a popular show as "Baywatch." Several things drew her to the role, including being able to film near her home and being part of an ensemble cast.
One thing she isn't too worried about is looking good on the beach.
"I like working out and it's something I enjoy." Kapture says. Still, she admitted she might "work out a little bit harder and a little bit longer" now that she's on the world's most-popular show.
Kapture's also pleased that "Silk Stalking" fans still remember her days with the show by erecting numerous Internet sites dedicated to the team of Chris and Rita. "I can't imagine what it would it would feel like to put your heart and soul over five years into something and then have no one miss it," she observes. "That would be a drag."
After all, Kapture had a great reason to leave the show. She was seven months pregnant with her daughter, Madison, now two. "It felt like a really appropriate time to end it and to do other things. I wanted to be a mom for a little bit and do other projects."
However, Kapture didn't rule out reteaming with former-partner Estes in the future:
"I think that would be great! We've talked about looking at projects and maybe someday that'll happen."
But for now, other than "Baywatch," Kapture has two feature projects in the works, including a script that she wrote and hopes to direct.
With such a busy schedule, the actress says she has some advice for readers: "The more you can find out who you are, the better off you are."
It looks like Mitzi Kapture knows who she is, all right. A star.
