- his father was William Howard Duvall, a military officer and former US navy admiral
- his mother was an amateur actress, but some sources say, she ran a cooking business
- Robert has two brothers, one older: William (professor of music), one younger than Robert: Jack (an attorney)
- he has two stepdaughters, Nancy and...I don't know the name of the 2nd stepdaughter
- Roberts greatgrandparents named his grandfather Abraham Lincoln Duvall
- Robert is an enthusiastic tango dancer, and is chairman of the U.S. Tango Academy
- was married 3 times: with Barbara Benjamin (1964 - 1975, divorced), Gail Youngs (1982 - 1986, divorced) and Sharon Brophy (01. May 1991 - 1996)
- now living together with Luciana Pedraza (she is also born on January, 5th, but about 40 years younger than Robert)
