Cass Family Reunion of August 1996! A picture of everyone who was there at the Smrekar's in Cadillac, MI!

This is a picture of my grandfather, Merwin
Lawrence Cass, when he enlisted in the Navy, circa 1910.
Here is my grandfather (on the right) about 7
years later, enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War I as an
ambulance driver, circa 1917.
I have typed in my grandfather's personal log from his days in both the Navy and the Army. It's very interesting reading about the daily life of a soldier around the turn of the 20th century. You can read it here.
I am always digging for clues to help "flesh out" my genealogy tree, so to speak. The exploration of my own ancestry has led me to a new interest in American history. What was average, everyday life really like back in the "old days"?
I have lately been corresponding via email with several other CASS researchers. It seems the electronic age has really been a blessing to information seekers like genealogists! If you are interested in corresponding about genealogy, email me. Below you can view an Ahnentafel chart just to get your interest up (and if you recognize any names or places, you could share your info, by the way ;). The chart shows all of my (known) direct ancestors and their wives back to the first John CASSE in America, and some others in England. I have about 8,000 CASS-related people in my genealogy database at home, which is mostly made up of records that have been given to me by other CASS researchers. And, yes, there are some "famous" people in my ancestry! :) Have you ever heard of General Lewis Cass? Look up the U.S. presidential election of 1848 and see!
Hey, and did you know that the surname "CASS" is the 3884th most popular surname in America as of 1990? You can find your surname's rank in the U.S. Census Bureau's Name Index.
Check out this map of the frequency of people named Cass in the U.S. in 1990. Looks like the Northeast and South Dakota and Colorado are the winners!:
