Life does go on after a spinal cord injury. I have a 16 year old son & a 5 year old daughter who are the joys of my life. I thank God I am still here for my children. My goals initially were to drive again & return to my customer satisfaction position at American Freightways. However, over time my priorities changed and I have found that being at home with my daughter, attending my sons athletic events, and working with our church's children program are most fullfilling at this time. After my son is gone to college and my daughter is in school all day I would like to go back to school and become a counselor for families whose lives are affected by drug addiction and / or alcoholism.
I want people to realize a person with a spinal cord injury is the same person as he/she was before their injury. Many people don't know how to treat peole with disabilities - treat them as you would if they didn't have a disability. If you know someone with a new SCI one of the most important things you can do for them is remain an active friend in their life - visit them, call them & let them know you are there for them. A special thanks goes out to Shanda, Pam & Glenn for being such wonderful friends! Also to my family for their help & support!
