Rependance Townsend appears to be the progenitor of the Anson Co. North Carolina and many of the South Carolina and other Southern States families.
Rependance was born in England about the year 1710-1713 and died in South Carolina. Just when he came to America I do not know. But he was married and settled in Augusta, VA., by 1745 when his son Solomon was born.
He married Mary Taylor about 1744 in VA. She was born about 1729 and had several known sons, which were born in three states, Virginia, North and South Carolina.
Repentance patented land in Augusta Co. VA., for 277 acres on Second Fork of Thorney Branch of North River of Shanandore, dated 5 September, 1749.
From Deed book 3 Augusta Co. VA., 9th November, 1750. Repentance Townsend to James Brown, 227 acres on No. River of Shanado on a branch called the Second Fork of Thorney Branch, Coroner of Smith's land. Mary wife of Repentance. Witness: John Brown, John Coningham, Alexander Richey.
From Augusta Co. VA. Court Records book 24 page 322 Repentance Townsend and Mary summoned May Court, 1755, on charge of not bringing up their children in a Christian like manner.
By November 25, 1755 Repentance and Mary had removed from Augusta Co., and believed the Court Summons being the reason
they left Virginia, and made their way southward into Anson Co. by April 24, 1756 when Repentance witnessed a deed in the sale from William Beard to Robert Davis.
It appears Repentance moved from Anson Co. to Tryon Co. North Carolina. From The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research
1979 entitled "Some Early Settlers on Fishing Creek" reveals the following: REPENTANCE TOWNSEND … a plantation or tract of Land Containing 300 Acres Situate as Supposed when run out to be in Tryon County, North Carolina, on the Main fork of fishing Creek, including his own Improvement, beginning at a hickory on the Indian Line, Samuel Porter's Corner, Joining William Smith Land, John Salter's Corner. Originally Granted the 11th December 1770 to Repentance Townsend by Governor, but by a late resurvey of the boundary Line between North and South Carolina the above tract of Land falls within the province of South Carolina in Craven County.
What this survey tells is that Repentance was in Tryon Co. NC., Tryon was discontinue in 1779 and became Lincoln Co. and on the survey he fell in Craven Co. South Carolina. Repentance never moved from North Carolina but fell into South Carolina and was in Craven Co. He is listed in Craven Co. on the census in 1787.
