SOUTH WEST
HEAD
South West Head Lighthouse opened January 1, 1880 with
Walter McLaughlin as its first keeper.

The lighthouse was built at the top of 230 feet
cliffs,
about 2 1/2 miles from the village of Seal Cove, at
the very southern tip of the island. Mr. McLaughlin
moved his large family into the adjoining house under
quite severe conditions and remained there until his
retirement in 1901.

An early postcard
In 1959 a new modern lighthouse was built near the old
one and the old one torn down. Two dwelling houses were built nearby ( a third house later).
