Born Claudia Alta Taylor on December 22, 1912 in a country mansion near Karnack, Texas, "Lady Bird" Johnson is one of the most well known Texas Women. Known for the help she gave her husband, Lyndon Johnson during his political career as well as being the founder of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
Lady Bird has continued to lead a full and busy life in all aspects. Born to Minnie Pattillo Taylor and Thomas Jefferson Taylor, Lady Bird's life has been one adventure after another.
Thomas raised younf Lady Bird with the help of her aunts and family servants after her mother died in 1917. Always maintaining excellent grades through school, Lady Bird attended the University of Texas where she recieved her bachelors degree in both Arts and Journalism.
She met Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1934. After just 7 weeks of courtship, they married in November of 1934. When talking about her husband, Lady Bird was quoted to say "Sometimes Lyndon simply takes your breath away".
Several miscarriages plagued her in the beginning of her marriage. But after many tries, Lady Bird gave birth to Lynda Bird (Mrs. Charles S. Robb now) in 1944. Three short years later, another beautiful daughter, Luci Baines (Mrs. Ian Turpin now) was born in 1947.
Lady Bird was very active and helpful in her husband political career. Helping where she could, they were a team in every since of the word. She took part with Lyndon on his "war-on-poverty" program called The Head Start Project for preschool children.
A few years after publishing her book titled "White House Diary" (1970), Lyndon died in 1973.
Lady Bird founded the Wildflower Center in the 1982. The main purpose behind the center is to educate people about the enviromental necessity, economic value and natural beauty of native plants. Now the center maintains one of the largest collections of information about Native North American plants and makes this information available to more than 20,000 members.
Now days, her time is devoted to the center, her husband's memory, her children and 7 grandchildren
