Can anyone help me with information on the ancestors of Benjamin Salkeld, my great-great-grandfather. Thanks to Keith (Salkeld), I believe he is listed in the Mormons IGI Benjamin Salkela-yes, Salkela, but is fact a Salkeld. In the 1881 census he was aged 45 years old, married to Leah (nee Wolsteholme) and I believe he was baptized 26 July 1835 in Church, Lancashire, England. His parents were, I believe Joseph and Ellen. Any information gratefully received, and if anyone can assist, I believe that there may be an ancestral link with Gamblesby, Cumbria, between Penrith and Alston.Steven Salkeld-Pratt

Hello. My name is Nancy Salkeld, my husband is David Salkeld and part of the Salkelds from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. His father and stepmother, Ian and Lesley Salkeld sent us this e-mail address for information on the Salkelds. My husband is very interested in finding other Salkelds in the country and other places. We look forward to checking this site periodically to learn more about some of the Salkelds. His family is dated back to the Salkeld towns in England.Nancy Salkeld

Looking for more information on...John Thomas Salkeld married Anne Wakefield on the 31st August 1887.... He was a music teacher and played the Rochdale(England) Town Hall organ. He had a son, John Albert Salkeld, my grandfather...(See 1951 Photo below)

...and a daughter, Eleanor. I know nothing of Eleanor. John Albert married Harriet Davis, who hailed from Shifnal in Shropshire, England and they had the following children: Benjamin b.1919, Thomas Robinson 1920-1990, Jack b.1921, Doreen 1922-1933, Hilda 1923-1976 and my mother, Florence Alwina b.19 December 1925. John Albert founded the Townhead Chromium Plating Company. Most of his offspring worked there...between 1946 up to the early 1980's. Thomas Robinson had 2 daughters,Valerie b. 1947 and Linda b.1950. Hilda had a daughter Patricia Hayton b.1947 and an son John Hayton b. 1952. My mother had a son David Pratt b. 1946, a daughter Susan Pratt b.1948 and myself b.25 December 1952. The Salkeld name actually ends with me, as none of the offspring had males - that's why I'm trying to find out more about my line - even though the name dies, the line will carry on through my son and 2 daughters.Steven Salkeld-Pratt

My name is Sian Salkeld-Bloor from Sale, Cheshire, UK, see "Who Are You?". I have been to St. Cuthberts in Great Salkeld and visitor's book was full of Salkeld's from Australia, but we don't hear much from them. Does anyone know what branch of the family moved over there and when? I would also be very interested to find out if anyone has any information on my Grandads family in the Northeast of England, possibly around the Hull area. He would have been born around the beginning of the 1900's approx. 1905 - 1910.Sian Salkeld-Bloor

I am now the registered SALKELD researcher for the GOONS (Guild Of One Name Studies) member no. 3236 and will over time, probably a long time as there are an estimated 20,000 Salkeld events. I will be keeping records of these with the object of offering advice to others researching the name. Anyone interested can contact me initially on my email. This is not a genealogical research service but simply an obligation to supply relevant information I have to hand at the time of the enquiry.Keith Salkeld

I would like to hear from anyone who might know of or be related to Oscar Salkeld, who came to America from England in the mid 1800's. He is my grandfather and owned property in Pittsburg. I believe he had two sons, one named Ervin Salkeld, my father, the other I don't know about. Any information would be great.Gilbert R. Salkeld

Hi, my name is Phyllis McReynolds, I am in no way related to the Salkeld family, but as I've researched my own family, I found a letter written to my grandfather, John E. Tucker, from Cpl. George Salkeld. The letter was written during WWI and is dated July 21 1919. He was stationed in Fort Stevens, Oregon. I don't know where Mr. Salkeld is from, but he mentions in his letter that he has "received a letter from Maggie, also one from Minnie." I found a family tree in the Family Tree Maker Program in which a George Salkeld married a Margaret Ann McCollough. I tried to contact the contributor, but have never been in contact with her. Family Tree Info: George Allen Salkeld was born Nov. 26, 1895 in Clinton, Armstrong County, PA and died June 14, 1954 in Philadelphia, PA. Margaret ws born Jan. 2, 1895 in Ford Cliff, PA and died May 11, 1966. George and Margaret were married Nov. 22, 1921. There were three children: George Henry, Robert Lavergne and Agnes Patricia. I don't know if this is the same George Salkeld that I'm looking for, but since her married a Margaret, I'm hoping. I hope you can help me find someone in this family who is related and would like to have a copy of this letter. Thanks!Phyllis McReynolds

I have recently found my Great-grand Mother Catherine salkeld of 21 Dagger St., Hull, England. She died 15th Jue 1941 aged 74 and was buried at the Hedon Road Cemetery in Hull after a service at St. Charles Church, Hull. I am trying to find her husband and/or children. Does anyone have any information on the Hull Salkelds? there were a couple of her sons killed whilst serving in the Merchant Navy in the First World War, but we don't know their names and I can't find them on the Commonwealth Graves Site. Anyone found any Salkelds there?? Many Thanks,Sian Salkeld-Bloors

When I lived in Rigaud, Quebec there was a little log house that was built along the Riguad River and apparently was a water mill that was owned by a Salkeld in the 1800's. I would like to know a little more about them. I know that there are Salkelds living in or near Pointe Claire, Quebec and I wondered if they are related to the Salkelds in Riguad.Louise Salkeld

My dad's name is Gilbert Salkeld. His dad was Ervin, who had four kids, Doris, Oscar, Robert and my dad Gilbert. Ervin's dad was Oscar, who I think was originally from England, then lived in the Pennsylvania area and then moved to Illinois. My dad always said he was a travelling preacher. That's all I know so far. (Anyone able to help please write).Rhonda Salkeld-Foster

Would appreciate any information on Harry Douglas Salkeld Sr. and/or Harry Douglas Salkeld Jr. from the New Jersey/New York area!Jennifer Salkeld-Nelson

My grandfather was born out of wedlock in the late 1870's. He too his mother's name of Proctor. His full name was Frederick James Proctor of Northumberland, North East England. We never knew who his father was. Thirty years ago a friend of my grandfather and grandmother wrote down some notes when she was in her 80's, long after my grandparents had died. She mentioned that my great-grandmother had been a "maid" for a famiy who had a jewelry business in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne by the name of Salkeld and that a son of her employer fell in love with my great-grandmother, who was very pretty. When she became pregnant he wished to marry her but his family refused. My great-grandmother later married a man called Gallon. My granfathre Frederick James Proctor never took the name Gallon. He Married my grandmother, Annie Isabella Hetherington when he was 21. He was a coal miner in South East Northumberland and at the age of 22 suffered serious head injuries in an accident underground. He was taken by horseback to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (15 miles away) in agony and was not expected to survive. he received pioneering treatment from a surgeon from Edinburgh. While he was in the hospital a tall distinguished gentlman visited him and pressed a gold chain into his hand. It is believed that this gentleman was his father. Does anyone know of a family in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne who were Jewelers with the name of Salkeld....?Violet Anne Proctor Bell

I have been doing some research off an on for awhile on the connection between Salkeld-Sockwell-Socwell. I have been able to search as far back as 1660 to Lancelott Sockwell. The name changed many times over the years, but it is almost certain that the name in England was Salkeld. The name has been found in different records as follows: Sockwell, Socwell, Sockquil, Saucull, Sackwell, Sockell, Salkwell, Sawkell, Salkeld, Sakild, Sobell, Sawlkell and Syacknell. The spelling and origin of the surname from England is Salkeld and I but wonder that is how some have the spelling so close and sound so close because ultimately come from the same descendant line. Now I know that the Sockwell's down south still spell the name with a "k" and ancestors that had moved north had dropped the "k". Although slight changes in the spelling were done. Our ancestor Lancelott Sockwell was most likely born Lancelott Salkeld. If I am wrong in my thinking and you could shine any light to what I have said please do so. In appreciation Pamela Socwell

I have been told I am quarter Cherokee and I have been searching through my ancestry trying to find some kind of proof. My name is spelled Salkil, but to my understanding ti used to be spelled Saltkill, the spelling was changed according to census records between 1900 and 1910 by my great-grandfather Charles H. Salkil, I don't knw if this is any help, but this is the first time I have seen it spelled the way you have it spelled. The farthest my ancestry has been traced is to a David Saltkill from Indiana, but he was born in Maryland. He had two sets of children. His second son spelled his last name Salkeld, first name James Thomas J. Another son Charles H. Salkil. We, my wife and I, would just like to know if anyone has any further information, and whether the Indian ancestry is fact.Rick Salkil

My name is Gregory George Salkeld and I am atttempting research into my ancestry. My fathers name was George and from what I can ascertain, he was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England on 5th February 1912. My father did not discuss his early history although I believe he had brothers and sisters. He owned and worked in a fencing contract business in Kyogle, NSW in the late 40's and married my mother, Joan Ferguson in 1956. I believe this was his second marriage. My father died in 1983 and I sent a letter to London's central registry and received a reply that the only record they had was a George Sirkell or Sarkell born in Newcastle on Tyne in 1912. The advice also states he was the son of Sarah Dolman. Any information would greatfuly be appreciated. Thank you...Greg Salkeld
