Tuesday 4 July

A cool, misty morning. Very quiet, no bird or cattle sounds though we could smell the cattle when we came in yesterday.

Kilkenny Castle

Speaking of birds, we saw lots of crows along the roadside and occasionally robins and sparrows but that's it...where are they all?

We went into town early to find a Laundromat. While the clothes were drying we took advantage of the Internet café. It is lovely to sign in and find messages downloading to us as well as us sending them.

Kilkenny Castle is fabulous. We did the guided tour, which I had expressed no interest in but thoroughly enjoyed. After that we did the 'hop on and off' bus tour again. I had hoped to sit on the beautiful lawns and sketch but the weather was fine, drizzly rain so no go! The history here is mind boggling with remains of fortified city walls and wonderful old churches etc. This afternoon we visited Saint Canices Cathedral. Russ climbed the steps to the top of the tower while I took advantage of the improved weather and did a small painting.

Then we 'hopped' back on the bus and asked the driver to drop us near our parked car. The city streets are narrow and winding with tight corners. Also, very narrow footpaths so the double-decker buses feel like they are nearly cutting the corners off buildings, and I cringe when something wide comes toward us.

Then there is 'the open road'! The speed is unlimited out of town. That means 60 MPH on narrow winding roads with hedges or stone walls right to the edge. I would rather the limit be 40 Km NOT MPH!

The drizzly rain today was patchy but still quite warm. Tomorrow we are planning to enter County Tipperary.
