Outside Smoo Cave

Second chamber, Smoo cave

We awoke to heavy skies and drizzle and left Veyatie after 3 nights and headed north again. Only a short drive today. Mel Chapman, our host of last night had rung ahead and booked us in at Coldbackie. Soon after we left we hit dense fog, which soon became patchy. This coupled with the very narrow two-way roads and drizzle made for a slow trip. We stopped to visit Smoo Cave and were nearly blown over the cliff by the fierce, cold winds. We had hoped to do a tour of the caves system but the main cave was flooded so the tours cancelled. We took photos of the huge outer cave.

The adjacent hills were adorned by very interesting graffiti made from small white stones which amass the landscape.

Once we hit the coast again the fogs and mists were blown away so we had some good views, especially around lock Eriboll where we took photos of a large aquaculture setup. Also at the end of the rock at ? Ardnachie Point, remnants of old lime kilns and associated buildings.

We lunched at Tongue and hit the bank there for some cash replenishment before booking in at our B&B. (Strathtongue Old Manse) where we were shown to a lovely loft bedroom with beautiful mountain views.

Afternoon weather cool, but at least the cloud was starting to break up. We dined at the local pub. Our hostess allowed us to use her computer to write the next instalment of our travelogue that we saved to disc, therefore saving time next time we were on line.
