Sunday 30 July, 2000
Headed straight up north to Staffin to the Internet centre,
Columba 1400. Unfortunately they were closed until 11 AM so we continued up north and around the peninsula: a very pretty coastline. We passed Duntalum Castle ruins and called in to see a crofter's village at Kilmuir. Unfortunately the complex is closed on Sundays! We saw a monument to Flora McDonald (of Bonny Prince Charlie fame0. The only road across the peninsula and back to Staffin was a minor road just before Uig, so off we went. A narrow ribbon of tar, meandering across what appeared to be huge bog fields with frequent peat cuttings and steep hills all around.

Just as we got to the peninsula near Staffin the escarpment fell away spectacularly and the views as we wound down were beautiful. We hope the photos show the immensity of it all.
On to Staffin and Columba 1400 for e mailing. This is a community and international leadership centre. Very modern buildings with a restaurant and Internet café and what appeared to be various meeting/activity rooms. The only info from the lass in the coffee shop was that they host groups of young people from all over the world. Unfortunately, being Sunday, the Internet facility was closed but on hearing our disappointment we were allowed upstairs to use the computers. We were able to access our mail but the line dropped out before we could forward news so we headed back down south. We stopped for more photos and a quick sketch of an old bridge near Sligachan. It would once have taken traffic to Dunvegan but now sits along side the new bridge.

On then to Broadford to the B&B, coincidentally also named Caberfeidh and also run by a Mrs McKenzie. Spectacular views from our bedroom window, out over the inner sound and across to the mainland, to the very mountainous area we intend heading toward next.
When we awake this morning we were greeted with for the first time, full sunshine streaming in our window. The day continued mainly sunny but with occasional big black clouds and threatening rain. Quite a cool breeze all day....though hot in sunny protected spots.
