Sunday 23 July

It was overcast with a cool breeze. We drove around Swansea (Abertawe) Bay. A pretty beach, no surf. A nice peninsula to the west with a lighthouse out to the north and scenes resembling Newcastle or Wollongong dock yards (NSW). Probably bigger than Newcastle with lots of dirty chimneystacks, smoke and smog. There were fossickers with metal detectors on the beach. I imagine that stretch was very heavily populated in yesterday's heat.

The biggest hospital at Swansea was 'The Singleton General Hospital' and there were signs everywhere for a concert at Singleton Park. This was strange to me as I had done nurse training at 'The Singleton General Hospital' in NSW.

We filled with petrol at Brecon. 89.9p/l, 30 Pounds Sterling.

We headed north and for the first time stuck to the highway system. The roads were good and fast.

Today we passed hundreds of 'bikies', they were out in force! Also lots of small towns with pretty hotels and guesthouses.

Builth Wells

Plenty of parking bays along the highway, lots of 'snack' vans. Through very mountainous areas, lots of hikers, sheep, planted fields (? maize). Drizzly at times. Mountain roads here are less narrow than Ireland.

We had morning tea at 'The Drovers Arms', Builth Wells. A pub used by drovers until 1910 when the stock was re routed, bypassing the main street.

We stopped at Llangollen, a pretty little village that resembled Camden, NSW, with lots of crafts and tourist shops and nearly as many people as Dublin City...really amazing!

We had rung ahead to a village just out of Chester. We stayed at the best place yet, 'Whitewalls' in Christleton, a very old rural village just out of Chester (England). A 'B&B' in the true sense of the word, with just one guest bedroom.

Riverboat at Christleton, outside the pub where we had dinner.

There is a beautiful old well in the village but I forgot to ask its history. We did take photos but they aren't too good due to poor light. We walked to the village pub for dinner and afterwards got out our bottle of Bushmills Irish Whiskey and Brian made us all Irish coffee. YUM!
