Play & Learn Arithmetic - Yes!

Learning math involves learning both concepts ( 3 x 4 means 4 + 4 + 4) and facts (3 x 4 = 12). In our homeschooling, we have developed some simple games that make learning the basic math facts less boring, and more enjoyable. My children like to play games that can be won. I used to give out stickers to the winner; lately that has not been necessary, they just like to win sometimes. We derived these games out of ideas presented in several books, particularly Games for Learning, by Peggy Kaye, and Family Math, by Jean Kerr Stenmark, Virginia Thompson, and Ruth Cossey. To play one of these games, you will generally need to print out the webpage containing the game, or create your own page using pen, pencil or computer; and you will need some dice, or spinners, or a regular pack of playing cards to generate the numbers. Here are some of our favorite games:

Add-Em-Up

For learning basic addition facts, and also that each sum can be produced in several ways. For instance, 7 equals 6 + 1, or 5 + 2, or 4 + 3, etc. This leads into subtraction.

Times Up

For learning basic multiplication facts, and becoming familiar with each number's factors, which leads to division facts.

Tamara and Esma Corey were both born in the former republic of Georgia, where they lived until we adopted them in 1994. They love to beat Mama at these games.
