John owned a sugar plantation in Cuba for a time until the land was taken over by the Cuban government. The letter was dated April 8, 1909. After the Cuban government took over his land, they made a penal colony out of it. According to a letter to Ralph Warren Heap, from Elizabeth Kimball, (daughter of Florence Nightingale Heap Kimball) "John owned a fruit plantation on the Isle of Pines, but lost it when the United States gave up Cuba. Think it cost too much to ship the fruit to the U.S." John lived to be about 95 yrs old.
