Franconia Ridge
White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire March 17, 2000 Our first morning. Previous day we drove up from Virgina - a 12 hour drive. Parked at Galehead trail head and took taxi back arround to Lincon woods. Hiked a couple of miles in under a full moon - almost didn't need our head lamps. We didn't bother putting on the tent fly because it was not a cold night, and we hoped it would help reduce the frost on the inside of the tent. It didn't. At 5:30 AM when we got up It was 8 deg F outside and 18 deg F inside the tent. It had snowed 7 " the day before and there was fresh snow on all the twigs, but this morning it looked like it would be a beautiful day. |
We hiked up Osseo trail toward Mt. Flume. The trail in the lower slopes of the mountain was flanked with beaustiful birch and and fir trees. We were snowshoeing in the tracks someone else had made with skis. | ![]() |

Higher up on the mountain the ski track disapeared. The skier had turned arround, but we didn't. The snow got deeper and the slope got steeper. TOO steep for snowshoes. Keith is putting his crampons on here. |
