2003 is the year of the Water Goat!
February 1, 2003 - January 21, 2004
Any Chinese year invariably begins with the second new-moon day after the winter solstice. The Chinese New Year's day, therefore, is movable — just as Easter Day, which is also tributary of the moon — and takes place somewhere between January 21st and February 20th according to astronomic circumstances. The birth of the Chinese Horoscope animal signs began when Buddha summoned all the animals for a meeting at a certain time. Only 12 animals attended the meeting, namely the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The arrival order and the animal names were later used as the 12 Chinese horoscope signs. Each animal sign represents the name of each lunar year in sequence and is repeated after a 12 year cycle. In Chinese calendar the 12 birth signs, named after 12 different symbolic animals, associated with every 12 year, in other words, each year is named after each animal and those born during that year would inherit some of the personality of that animal. A complete circle is 60 years.
Chinese years also evolve in cycles of ten years each. Every set of two consecutive years is governed by a Chinese cosmic element. There are five elements in all: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water.
